Locally based GreenStar, an LED lighting manufacturer, has signed a contract with Houston-based Toshiba International Corp.

The dollar amount of deal was not disclosed. However, Mark Altomare, vice president of business development for Toshiba LED Lighting Systems Division, says Toshiba’s agreement calls for GreenStar to produce and Toshiba to market LED luminaires for use as roadway and area lighting, and in high- and low-bay applications.

"These products will be available exclusively through Toshiba in North America. Product details will be available at a later date," Altomare says. "GreenStar is committed to LED technology and creating innovative, energy-efficient, durable solutions. Toshiba has a 120-year heritage in lighting innovations, and we are excited about taking this next step."

GreenStar was one of the five companies that relocated to San Antonio as part of a partnership with CPS Energy and the city of San Antonio to participate in the city’s new energy economy efforts.

In addition to the move of its headquarters from Boerne, GreenStar also agreed to hire local employees and provide educational dollars. GreenStar has already agreed to give $10 to the University of Texas at San Antonio for every light it manufactures. And it plans to install 25,000 LED streetlights throughout the city.

Rod Gray, GreenStar’s executive vice president of sales and marketing, says he’s excited about this deal because it will help his company do even more for San Antonio. "It’s big for all of us because the more we make the more we sell, the more UTSA gets out of it, the more people we hire, the bigger we get," Gray says. "It proves that this new energy economy model, that (CPS Energy CEO Doyle) Beneby and Mayor (Julian) Castro are advocating, works. And I think this is a good example of how it can work. We’ve attracted the big boys to San Antonio, and it’s only going to grow from there.

"So, we have a huge force in place of dealers, reps and distributors ready to go to start marketing our product. That means a lot of feet on the street selling our product by a reputable company that has partnered with GreenStar. We expect business to double, triple or quadruple," Gray adds.

Gray says Toshiba reached out to GreenStar after seeing a webcast about the announcement last year on the city’s energy efforts.
